Why Carrefour Might be the Next Largest Retailer in Kenya

Carrefour, whose local franchise is held by Dubai-based conglomerate Majid Al Futtaim, entered the Kenyan market back in 2016.

Its first store was opened at The Hub, which is located along Ngong road followed by its second store in March 2017, at the Two Rivers Mall.

Carrefour now has a total of 7 outlets across Nairobi, that is, at Village Market, Thika Road Mall, the Sarit Centre, Galleria and The Junction

The retailer has a wide variety of over 30,000 food and non-food items across its 7 stores in Nairobi, offering an abundant and lively marketplace that features butchery, fishery, delicatessen, cheese and home-made bakery sections and many more.

Carrefour’s items are considerably affordable and cheaper compared to other retailers in the market, despite the popular notion of the retail store being high-end.

Carrefour prides itself in that it offers refunds ten times the difference whenever a customer finds a product cheaper elsewhere.

“Carrefour’s commitment towards its customers remains its main focus as it establishes its presence here in Kenya” said Franck Moreau, Country Manager of Carrefour Kenya.

The retailer offers numerous services to its customers such as 1-hour free parking, price checkers inside stores, exchange and refund policies, home deliveries for bulk items, price guarantee for the customer incase of mismatch at the cash counter, among others.

Another amazing fact about Carrefour is that it has offers e-commerce services through Jumia’s platform.

One could very well say that Carrefour’s entrance in Kenya has been very strategic and timely considering the fact that Kenya’s largest and most popular retailer, Nakumatt closed shop after going through financial crisis.

Nonetheless, Carrefour says that it is aware of the fact that most Kenyan shoppers compare what they offer to what Nakumatt once offered. “We are aware of the comparison. However, Carrefour prides itself in its ability to deliver unbeatable customer choice, quality, value and customer services” said Ahmed Al Derazi, General Manager – Corporate Communications, Carrefour.
