Safaricom has once again hit the waves as it announces the launch of VoLTE, a service brought by HMD Global, which focuses on improving the experience when using Nokia Android smartphones.

“It’s an exciting day for all of us in Kenya as Safaricom launches VoLTE to enable us all to make calls using the data network. We’re delighted that we have over 15 of our Nokia Android smartphones that our fans can use to access the new VoLTE service,” Mark Misumi, HMD Global’s East Africa Business Manager said.

What VoLTE entails
VoLTE stands for voice over LTE this means one can make voice calls over a 4G LTE network, rather than the 2G or 3G connections available in Kenya. The launch of 4G in Kenya has enabled better downloading, streaming and web browsing and that is primarily is what we have used it for, but it can also be used to improve calls.

To use VoLTE a customer needs to have a compatible device that supports VoLTE on the Safaricom network, as well as the VoLTE service provisioned on their SIM card.

VoLTE will only function when in 4G/LTE coverage. However, it is important to note that the device will automatically switch back to the older 2G and 3G technologies when necessary to enable a seamless experience. A customer on VoLTE can call a customer on a non-VoLTE device, or who is not in 4G/LTE coverage, and vice versa, however.
