“He was at peace, he was ready and was aware of his health challenges,” these are words used by Safaricom Plc Chairman Nicholas Ng’ang’a to capture his Ceo’s Bob Collymore’s last minutes.

Ng’ang’a spoke of a Bob Collymore that died in peace in his Nairobi home, surrounded by his family and close friends.

In the quiet room of Michael Joseph’s Safaricom Headquarters in Westlands, Nairobi, unspoken sadness prevailed as the shock of Kenya’s biggest telecommunication company CEO Bob Collymore’s death sunk.

His achievements did not go unrecognized when the Chairman stood to address members of the Fourth Estate in the press conference.

“Its a very sad day for us, this is not what we have been expecting,” Ng’ang’a said.

The Safaricom Chairman was accompanied by former Safaricom CEO Michael Joseph who was understandably overwhelmed by emotion. Linda Muriuki and the newest into the board members, Rose Okengo also accompanied Mr. Ng’ang’a during the press conference.

“The treatment seemed to have worked but the last few weeks have seen Bob’s health deteriorated leading to his death in the early hours of today which is 1st July 2019,” Ng’ang’a said adding that Bob’s family, which included the larger Safaricom PLC was at pains after the loss.

“For nine years, Bob has provided great leadership to Safaricom and helped the company grow to greater heights, “Ng’ang’a noted adding that Bob’s presence was of great importance and benefit to Safaricom.

“We will honor him by completing his works and ensuring his legacy lives,” Ng’ang’a affirmed.

“There shall be a board meeting in the course of the day, 1st July, to deliberate on the way forward as the board has already been aware of the need to organize Bob’s succession, “Ng’ang’a said.

“The board will be in charge and there will be no loss of direction, “the board chair affirmed.

Bob Collymore will be laid to rest tomorrow, 2nd July 2019, a day after his death as he wished while he was alive according to the Safaricom Chair.

“A memorial service will be held later in the week, in a date the family will settle on,” the Chair informed.

May the soul of the late Safaricom CEO Robert (Bob) William Collymore rest in peace.
