Iconic athlete Robert Gwaro Ouko, who was a member of the 4×400 meters relay team in 1972 Munich Olympic Games, which won gold for Kenya, is dead.

Ouko died at the age of 70 years in his Ngong home on the night of 18th August 2019 at around 10 pm after a long illness.

The death of Ouko has left only two members of the 4×400 meters relay team alive, namely; Charles Asati and Hezekiah Nyamao as Julius Sang passed away on 9th April 2004.

The death of Robert Gwaro Ouko reveals the Government’s inability in delivering on its promise and role to the heroes of Kenya through the National Heroes Council as Ouko’s plight is revealed in a statement by Rose Tata Muya, a track legend.

“My brother and our legend Robert Ouko. I have struggled for you until the last minute until God decided to take you away,” Rose Tata said in the statement released on Monday morning.

“The financial support which has been lying and waiting to be signed at the Ministry (of Sport) for one month could have assisted you for medication,” Rose Tata noted painfully.

The Prophet Lacked Acceptance in His Hometown

Rose Tata said she was shocked by the news of Ouko’s death as last they had spoken, they had agreed to go meet the Sports Principal Secretary “to release the cash but everything was beyond their control.”

“I know you passed on with a lot of pain, struggling for assistance. We loved you but God loved you more. RIP our beloved Shujaa,” Tata’s emotional statement read.

Ouko won two gold medals at the 1970 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh, in the 800 meters and the 4×400 meters relay and later served as secretary-general of the Kenya Amateur Athletics Association, the forerunner of Athletics Kenya retirement upon his demise.
