Machakos County Receives A New Cancer Center As Fight Intensifies

Machakos Governor Dr. Alfred Mutua launched a cancer center at Machakos level 5 hospital on Thursday 29 August.

Machakos County residents who have been registered under the Universal Health Coverage program will receive services such as cancer screening, counseling, and chemotherapy for free on their first visit.

The new cancer center will be open to both residents of Machakos and non-residents but residents will have an advantage of specialized treatment rates

During the launch, Governor Mutua said that the 40-million-shilling cancer center will conduct high quality cancer diagnosis and offer treatment to cancer patients from within and out of the county.

“It has cost us 40 million shillings to put this center up. In the future, we intend to spend 300 million shillings to purchase several radiotherapy machines for this center. As we continue our development goals, one of the things we want to achieve is such treatment centers all over the county to see that our residents receive quality healthcare,” said the governor.

The County Government plans to partner with other hospitals and higher learning institutions to attract cancer specialists who in turn will provide the required specialized treatment.

To ensure quality services at the Machakos Cancer Centre, the governor explained that apart from working with specialists and researchers within the country, they will use telemedicine to get in touch with doctors from all over the world.

Speaking during the launch, Machakos County Governor spoke of the improvements his administration has made in the health sector over the past years.

“We have renovated our health care facilities and are striving to give the best care to patients. Mothers in our maternity wings now have hot showers,” he said.

“Health is a very important aspect of a country’s economy. Because of this, we have set aside 33 percent of the counties budget to ensure residents access affordable health care,” he added.
