How To Have A Successful Wedding With A Budget of 20,000 Shillings

Almost everyone dreams of having a “dream wedding” at one point in life. In the past few years, weddings have become the “in thing.” People are competing and who will have the “most memorable wedding.”

The issue of having a “dream wedding” has driven many young couples into taking huge loans just to “fit into the clique” of their peers. Some, after spending millions on weddings, run into debts, become bankrupt and get divorced within months because of financial constraints.

A few months ago, billionaire and philanthropist Manu Chandaria, elicited a conversation when he went to the office of the Attorney General (AG) to formalize his marriage. The man used only 9,700 shillings. Of course, many people thought the man is a miser, but no. This is Manu Chandaria we are talking about.

Anyway, did you know that you can also have your dream wedding with a budget of not more than 20,000 shillings? Take a pen and a notebook. Sit. Start taking notes.

First, you will need 600 shillings. This amount is to facilitate you to fill a notice of marriage at the Office of the Registrar General. You will have to wait for 21 days after filling the form.

Secondly, you will need to pay 3,300 shillings after which you will be given a marriage date by the Registrar of Marriages.

After paying 3,300 shillings, a marriage date will be set. You and your other half will present yourself at the office of Registrar of Marriages, Deputy County Commissioner or Assistant County Commissioner’s offices, take your vows and boom, you are man and wife.

How much is the above? 3,900 shillings ONLY.

Now, let us say you need to have a brief wedding at the office of Registrar of Marriage, the cost is still affordable. Upon paying the 600 shillings, you will pay another 9,700 shillings for your wedding at the office.

In that brief wedding, let us say you have invited some friends and close family members (say 10). Remember, in total, (with a brief wedding) you have paid 10,300 shillings. Add 3,000 shillings if you decide to hire a wedding gown.

After the brief ceremony at the Registrar of Marriages office, take your team of 10 quests (plus you and your loved one make it 12) to hotel. A good meal in a standard hotel will cost you at least 450 shillings per person. For 12 people, that comes to 5,400 shillings.

After the wedding, part ways. You and your loved one, take an Uber (if you don’t have a car). An uber will cost you say 1,000 shillings (not more than 2000 shillings.)

Now, let us do the math:

  • Booking an appointment – Ksh 600
  • Charges at Registrar’s office – Ksh 9,700
  • Wedding gown (not a must) – Ksh 3,000
  • Meals in a hotel – Ksh 5,400
  • Uber (taxi) – Ksh 1,500 (average)
  • TOTAL – Ksh 20,200
