Homabay Governor Cyprian Awiti left the Senate Committee members puzzled after he presented a letter written in German to explain his frequent absence from office.
Appearing before the County Public Accounts and Investment Committee (CPAIC) on Thursday 24th November 2019, Governor Awiti said he has been missing from office due to health issues and had to travel to Germany and India for treatment.
The Homabay County boss backed-up his excuse with a letter written in German, which none of the PAIC members could read or understand.
Governor Awiti has been summoned to appear before the County Public Accounts and Investment Committee (CPAIC) on several occasions but has missed saying he has been battling an eyesight problem for months.
Governor Awiti’s absence from office and failure to honor Senate Committee summons was not taken lightly by the chairperson of the committee and Homabay Senator Moses Kajwang’, who threatened to issue a warrant of arrest to the county boss.
Awiti complained about his eyesight problems urging the committee to understand his current situation.
Governor Awiti said he was unable to answer audit questions for the 2018/2019 financial year since was out on a sick leave.
Other than having a sick leave, Governor Awiti explained that his opponents had challenged his re-election which made him to lose focus in delegating his duties to the people of Homabay county.
He argued that he had to attend several court proceedings to defend his reelection as the Homabay governor which forced him to be absent from office.
The County Public Accounts and Investment Committee (CPAIC) members had to travel to Homabay to make it easier for Awiti to appear and defend himself.
Awiti’s health condition has spurred numerous reactions from members of the Homabay county assembly with some saying that the Governor should resign if his health condition is affecting his duties.
