KEBS Seizes 2,200 Kilograms Of Substandard Porridge Flour

The Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS) has seized 2,200 kilograms of substandard porridge flour together with 380 kilograms of sifted maize flour in Narok town on Thursday 22nd November 2019.

The seizing of the substandard flour by KEBS comes a few days after the bureau banned five maize meal products for allegedly having higher aflatoxin levels than the recommended ones.

Another maize meal product, Soko Maize Flour was banned in Kiambu by the Kiambu County Government over similar concerns of having higher aflatoxin levels than the recommended levels.

On the 20th of November, KEBS lifted a ban on two of the maize meal products, saying the manufacturers had withdrawn the poisonous products and were now adhering to the set standards. The ban was lifted on Dola and Kifaru maize flour products.

“KEBS inspectors thereafter, conducted inspections to review and determine the level of effectiveness of the controls put in place by your firm,” said KEBS

The lifting of the ban on Kifaru and Dola maize meal products by KEBS after a ban than lasted less than a week, has, however, raised concerns among Kenyans given that most of the “banned’ products were still on the shelves on most parts of the country.
