Overcrowded and Uneconomical Courses

Do you remember your childhood dream career that probably had bombastic words for prefixes? Well, Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) results were announced, a good number of students performed well, some actually knew they would perform according to expectations.

We were all happy, we celebrated with them, and now that the celebration mood has died down, it is time to face reality.

You will join universities to pursue specialized courses. It is important to note that what may be the best period for most of you until you finally graduate but ‘tarmacking’ is real out here.

Let me let you in on a secret, so many of us are still jobless yet some are surviving on things they were not trained in. Reason? There sadly are courses that are more marketable, with which you are almost sure to get trained and get employed.

Let’s tell you some of these courses so that you make sure to make the right decision as you proceed to higher learning institutions.

Computer Science/ Information Technology

We all know that technology has taken over the world. Nowadays, almost everything you do will require you to be tech-savvy. Most offices today have an IT department, which should tell you that Computer scientists are on high demand in terms of employment.

The beauty of this course is that, in a country where self-employment is the in thing, with this course and skills one can actually be their own boss.

Marketing

This one sells in the economic world. This is because, regardless of how big a company or organization is, companies still need to be on top of the game and improve their services more and to make it known to potential clients.

And what better way to achieve this than having marketers who help with selling a company’s services and growing the brand?

This is one of the courses you should think of pursuing.

Architecture

You may not know but there is a new course in a town known as real estate. The real estate sector is growing very fast as more and more people seek to invest in it.

Now, this is where architects come in handy.

Pharmacy

The pharmaceutical industry is one that is growing very fast, and especially now that professionals in the sector are in it to find cures for diseases that have become a menace in the country and the world at large (cancer, diabetes, heart diseases, etc).

One is trained for five years in university and on completion, there are jobs waiting to have you. You can also be your own boss with this course.

Medicine

We shall always, forever, need doctors. Our country is ailing for lack of enough professionals in this field. It is one of the most demanding and lucrative courses in Kenya and the world.

Nursing

Still in the medical sector, nursing is a course one should definitely consider pursuing. There are myriad choices of specialization one can choose to pursue when taking nursing as a course and finally a profession.

ED Science and B.ED Arts

Like doctors, we shall always need teachers. Even when technology is finding its way inside the classroom, with online courses being offered, there shall always be the need of a teacher to guide and instruct.

Most people do not like this profession because they think of the suffering teachers in the country go through but have a closer look at it and reconsider.

This is where curriculum developers, lecturers, and many other people are made.

Business (Finance, Economics, Procurement)

One cannot go wrong with courses under business and commerce. There are chances for getting employment and freelancing should one have additional professional courses such as CPA.

Bachelor of Science (BSc.) in Human Nutrition & Dietetics

Dieticians are those we go to for efficient nutritional advice and they can be found in various specialties such as Clinical dietitian, Oncology Dietitian, Nutrition and dietetic technicians among others.

Nutritionists can also teach, research, work in food industries, health facilities and consultancy.

Oil and Gas/ Petroleum Exploration & Production

This is said to be still new in Kenya as it was previously unheard of, but as you may already know, oil was discovered in Turkana and to be skilled in drilling production and distribution of gas is going to be one of the biggest things in Kenya.

Note that we are not saying that other courses are useless, in fact, do what you love. Your passion. In the end, it is your skills and to a large extent, being street smart that will help you get to the top.
