NTSA Now Clears Modern Coast Days After Killing 7

The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has lifted the ban on Modern Coast Express Limited and allowed them to operate starting today, Tuesday 17^th December 2019.

After the five day suspension, Modern Coast has notified its passengers and clients that they have been cleared by the NTSA and can now continue their normal operations.

Given that the agency’s suspension from service by the NTSA was abrupt, many clients were inconvenienced considering it is the festive seasons and most people were set to travel upcountry.

Upon clearance, the Modern Coast issued a statement, in which they registered their sincere apologies to their customers for inconveniences caused.

“We would wish to inform our customers that we have been cleared by the NTSA and operations will resume today starting at 1 pm. We also wish to apologize for the grave inconveniences caused to our esteemed customers,” read the twitter statement.

Modern Coast Express Limited was banned from operating after two of the agency’s buses collided on Thursday 12^th December morning resulting in a fatal accident that left seven people killed and 60 others injured.

The buses collided at Kiongwani along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway in the wee hours of Thursday morning.

Witnesses, who included injured passengers, recounted their ordeal saying that the two buses were over speeding, which they said was the reason the accident happened.

Some, however, blamed the accident on the two drivers’ fatigue, seeing that each driver did not have a co-driver yet they were driving for long distances.

It is after the accident that the NTSA announced that it had suspended all the 88 buses belonging to Modern Coast Bus Company to allow them to probe its safety standards and operations.

Even as Modern Coast resumes its operations, accident-related deaths are still on the rise, especially during these festive seasons.

Cabinet Secretary for Interior, Dr. Fred Matiang’i had earlier insinuated that concerned bodies are taking required measures to ensure that traffic rules are duly observed as a way of helping reduce the numbers of accidents and deaths.

This year, over 3,000 accident-related deaths have been recorded.
