Lecturers Threaten to go on Strike Starting January 20

University lecturers in Kenya have announced that they will not resume working as of 20^th January due to a failed agreement between them and the government.

Last year, lectures signed the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) last year on October 28, where university workers were to receive a 14 billion shillings salary increment.

Vice chancellors held a crisis meeting yesterday, 8th January 2020, after the Salaries and Remuneration Commission (SRC) rejected the salary increment.

According to the SRC, based on staff numbers and agreed percentage salary increments, the total amount for the 2017-2021 Collective Bargaining Agreement is 8.8 billion shillings and not 14 billion shillings.

The strike by lecturers will disrupt university calendars across the country with the first semester expected to start within the next week.
