Ex-president Hosni Mubarak of Egypt has died today, 25th January 2020, at the age of 91 years as confirmed by the State television.

Hosni Mubarak was Egypt’s president for almost 30 years when he was ousted from office by a public uprising against the poverty, corruption and repressive police tactics in the Arab Spring revolution.

After he stepped down, Mubarak was jailed but freed in 2017 after being acquitted of most charges. The acquittal stunned many Egyptians, thousands of whom poured into central Cairo to show their anger against the court.

State television has reported that Mubarak died just weeks after undergoing surgery. His brother-in-law, General Mounir Thabet, told AFP news agency he passed away at Cairo’s Galaa military hospital.

Before becoming president, Mubarak was a commander in the Egyptian Air Force from 1972-1975. He assumed the presidency following the assassination of former President Anwar Sadat, with whom he served as vice-president.

As he was stepping down, Mubarak was famously quoted saying, “Egypt and I shall not be parted until I am buried in her soil.”
