Uhuru’s Order On Coronavirus: Does Kenya Have The Virus Or Is It Preparation For A Soft landing?

President Uhuru Kenyatta has bowed to pressure on calls for him to act on the coronavirus and substituted a committee through a statement issued today, 28th February 2020, at State House in Nairobi.

President Uhuru noted that the Coronavirus Outbreak has manifested internationally across multiple continents with escalating numbers of new cases reported in different, isolated countries and through varied travel mediums.

The President has noted that there is a significant threat arising from the potential spread of the coronavirus to Kenya from Countries that have new and ongoing outbreaks of the pneumatic disease.

President Uhuru has noted that it is only prudent that a framework be established to upscale and co-ordinate Kenya’s preparedness and national response to the coronavirus threat upon which he has ordered for the following:

  • A national isolation and treatment facility be completed at the Mbagathi Hospital to be completed and ready to receive patients within the next 7 days from today.
  • Identification and preparation of isolation and treatment facilities in LEVEL 5 and Referral Hospitals across the Country be concluded by the 15th of March 22.
  • A National Emergency Response Committee on Coronavirus has been established.
  • That the Cabinet’s Ad-Hoc Committee on Health and the Inter-Ministerial Technical Committee on Government Response to the Coronavirus Outbreak are hereby subsumed into the National Emergency Response Committee and stand dissolved.
