“Catholic archbishop Ndingi Mwana Nzeki Is dead,” his eminence John Cardinal Njue has announced through a press release.
Born Raphael Ndingi Mwana Nzeki on 25th December 1931, the catholic bishop died in the early hours of 31st March 2020.
Ndingi Mwana Nzeki was consecrated as bishop of the Catholic Church by Blessed Pope Paul VI and has served the Catholic church from the year 1969 as the Bishop of Machakos Diocese.
Ndingi Mwana Nzeki proceeded to serve the Catholic church from the year 1972 to the year 1996 as the Bishop of the Nakuru Diocese.
Nzeki became a CoAdjuctor of Nairobi in the year 1996 and later in the year 1997 became the Nairobi Archbishop to the year 2007.
Ndingi will be remembered as one of the clergymen who played an active role in the struggle for the reintroduction of multiparty democracy in Kenya.
Though Ndingi Mwana Nzeki was a moderate who tried avoiding inciting the public against the government, the atrocities committed by the repressive Moi regime forced him to publicly condemn the authorities.
Ndingi Mwana Nzeki will be best remembered for his fearless confrontation of the provincial administration and the police for their role in political clashes of 1992 where 2000 people are reported to have died as he stood his ground in the fight.
