New KCC Fires 288 Workers in Nyahururu Factory

The New Kenya Co-operative Creameries Ltd (KCC) has fired over 200 of its casual workers in the Nyahururu factory which is located in Laikipia county.

The move to fire the casual workers according to management is aimed at paving the way for the modernisation of the factory.

The casual workers were handed letters terminating their contracts immediately on the 29th of February 2020 since according to the Managing Director Simon Wanjangi, there was not much production going on at the factory.

“This is to inform you that due to the temporary stoppage of production operations in the factory, to give room for factory modernisation, the management has decided to terminate your services with immediate effect,” read the letters.

The fired New KCC workers have, however, protested the move to terminate their contracts saying that the factory had hired recently hired new employees on a permanent basis. It was, therefore, illogical to let them go and hire new people since they were more experienced working at the factory.

The New KCC management also noted that holding on to the casual workers was a waste of time since no production was taking place at the factory.

The fired workers have however tarnished these reports and have claimed that production was taking place and that the management’s explanation was vague.

“There is no clear explanation as to why our services were terminated. We are reading mischief in the whole process and suspecting a hidden motive,” said Mr. James Mwangi, the casual workers’ spokesperson.
