Police in Machakos says they are holding about 720 youths who were called for a political meeting despite the government advising against mass gatherings.

According to the police officers the youth were told to congregate at a building in Machakos for online training but it was later revealed that the organizer of the meeting was a politician.

Machakos County Commissioner Esther Maina said they got tipped about the planned meeting by the members of the public.

The organizer of the meeting and the manager of the building where the meeting was to be held was arrested and taken to Athi River police cells. The two suspects will be screened before being taken to court.

“We went there and confirmed they were meeting and arrested the manager and the group’s leader. They flouted the Public Health Act and we intend to take action on the manager and the leader of the group,” said Mrs. Maina.

The County commissioner said the 720 youth are being held at the building and will be screened before being released.

Athi river police boss Catherine argued that it was hard to hold such a group stating they will test and screen them before they get released.
