Sage Fires Employees, Plans to Shut Down East African Offices

Sage Software East Africa has fired some of its employees as the company allegedly plans to exit the east African market.

According to an insider at Sage, some employees have been fired and have already received letters with a one-month ultimatum.

In a letter addressed to the affected employees, Sage said it was unable to avoid the redundancy due to operational requirements and the difficulties it had experienced.

” You began employments with Sage Software East Africa a division of Sage South Africa(PTY) Ltd on the ….your services became redundant as a result of Sage Software East Africa Business Requirements.”

“The past few months have not been easy and the decisions about how we are going to operate in the regional hubs were carefully considered. It is never easy to make decisions that impact our colleagues and they were not taken lightly, but they were made to ensure the long term success of the business.”

The insider complained that sage neither gave warnings nor informed them about the laying off the decision.

“We were only called to the office yesterday morning and given these letters. No prior warning no nothing.”

“They are busy calling it a right sizing exercise but in the real sense it’s a redundancy,” lamented the insider.

The employee said the redundancy was badly handled since the Chief Executive Officer had resigned and there was no one to complain to at the time.

“The sad part is that rumor has it that the CEO had resigned before hence the bad handling of the redundancy”

The employee said that it was still not clear how the projects we were going to be handled but the company said it had instead opted to work with its distributors.

“Thank you for your support and as we work with the distributors to embed Sage into their businesses, and as we embed the distributor models in our business. They are key to our future success.”

Sage, however, said in the letter that it had had a formal group consultation with the employees thus the decision was fairly and rightfully handled.

Sage wrote that the laying off process would take effect at the beginning of March and run to the end of March (March 1-March 31, 2020).

“It is to be noted that your last working day will be 31 March 2020 with one month paid as a salary for the notice period.”
