Total Lockdown: What You In Need As Coronavirus Cases Rise In Kenya

It is becoming clear that Kenya, sooner than later, is headed for a total lockdown that will see most shops closed down together with mama mboga joints.

It will be difficult for families that rely on daily buying of foods as movement will be limited, this is the time to stock up food as you go into that lockdown to avoid unnecessary movement that could see you exposed to the deadly coronavirus.

Stocking up basic essentials might not be possible especially for Kenyans who can barely afford three meals a day but if you can then below is a plan.

1. Stock Dry Foods In Preparation Of A Lockdown
There are foods that will stay for many months without staling as long as they are kept dry and in a cool place. A list of dry foods that are easy to store in large amounts includes the following:

– rice
– spaghetti
– pasta
– flour
– maize mill
– beans
– green grams
– powder milk
– long-life milk (ensure the expiry date is in 6 months)
– breakfast cereals such as Weetabix and oats especially for those with children
2. Stock Kitchen supplies in Bulk In Preparation Of A Lockdown

To ensure you are able to prepare meals in the event of a lockdown buy the following products in bulk:
– salt
– sugar
– bottled dry spices
– ketchup (ensure it has a 12 month period before it expires)
– cooking oil (there are even 20-liter-jerrycan)
– Water – drinking, and cooking
– Water guard to treat drinking

*Avoid foods that need refrigeration*

3. Medication In Preparation Of A Lockdown
– Paracetamol(Both adults and children where there)
– Anti-diarrhoea medication
– Inhalers if you have anyone asthmatic in your home
– Other meds for those with illnesses such as Gout, Blood Pressure, Diabetes, etc

4. General Sanitization and Personal Hygiene In Preparation Of A Lockdown

There are products that naturally are basic while others are crucial in maintaining hygiene

– Gloves

– Portable/pocket sanitizers
