You Still Risk Being Infected With Covid-19 After Recovering

The World Health Organization has warned that those who have recovered from Covid-19 are still at risk of getting re-infected.

According to the new statement released on Friday, April 24, 2020, the United Nation agency advised that people who have recovered from the infection should continue adhering to the safety standards until such a claim is proven right.

“There is currently no evidence that people who have recovered from Covid-19 and have antibodies are protected from a second infection,” WHO announced.

This announcement came after some governments like Chile were planning to allow recovered patients to continue with their normal lives by issuing them with “immune passports” or “risk-free certificate”.

“Immune passports” or “risk-free certificate” would allow the recovered persons to travel or return to work, based on the assumption that they were safe from re-infection, according to the statement to the statement from WHO.

“At this point in the pandemic, there is not enough evidence about the effectiveness of antibody-mediated immunity to guarantee the accuracy of an “immunity passport” or “risk-free certificate.”

“People who assume that they are immune to a second infection because they have received a positive test result may ignore public health advice. The use of such certificates may, therefore, increase the risks of continued transmission. As new evidence becomes available, the WHO will update this scientific brief.”

Experts say the immunity passport could split the society into two groups, one with those who are free of moving indiscriminately while the other with people confined in their homes for fear of contracting the virus since they have never been infected before.

However, the “Immunity Passport” would be effective if it is issued to people issuing essential services like healthcare workers, those working in food and grocery stores, security personnel among others. But since the assumption has not been proven, just stay at home.
