Makini Schools’ Parents Protest 70K Termly Fees For Online Learning

Makini Schools have come up with a plan for students to return to schools in their institutions but the parents are not impressed as they will have to cough out heftily for the services at a time everyone is complaining of tough financial times.

A group of Makini School parents has since come out to protest the decision by the institution to start online teaching which will see them charge as much as 70,000 shillings per pupil.

The parents argued that the school is forcing them to pay huge amounts yet the economic situation was dire and they would be footing all the other bills such as internet, laptops, and meals.

The communication Manager, Makini School, Katya Nyangi, however, defends the managerial decision to resume online teaching and the charges saying that the schools had spent a lot on preparations to enable virtual learning.

“Like other schools, we are offering lessons virtually. We did this after a lot of preparations, teacher training, and getting resources,” Ms Katya said.

The Makini Schools communication Manager also argued that there would no further charges once the term begins and so parents should work with the management to ensure the students smoothly resume learning.

“In fact, we have not charged them anything for May. We took a second term fee and split it into four monthly installments. When the term begins, there will be no additional charges,” Katya said adding that the school had given parents the option of going ahead with lessons in May or waiting until next month.

“Learning commenced on Monday. The school has formed a finance support team to enable parents to determine payment schedules depending on their circumstances and ability,” Katya argued.

Makini School will be joining schools such as Brookhouse that seek to resume teaching children online after regular class classes were suspended countrywide following the coronavirus outbreak.
