The Government of Kenya through the Ministry of Health has announced plans to give midwives Personal Protective Equipment PPEs to ensure their safety during the fight against Covid-19.

According to the Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe, the midwives have been the primary health caregivers for a long time and they are at risk of being exposed to Covid-19 during their line of duty.

“Midwives are particularly vulnerable to the coronavirus disease,” the Health CS said while announcing the cases of Covid-19 on Tuesday, April 5, 2020.

Midwives are handling a very sensitive issue and without their protection, the health of the expectant mothers as well as their infants could be at risk of contracting the infection.

“This means that pregnant women and their babies are at risk too. We are taking action to ensure they are all protected. This includes providing the midwives with the same personal protective equipment that other healthcare workers use to protect themselves against the virus.”

This announcement came at a time when the world is celebrating the International Midwives Day. The Health CS said their role in the society is appreciated and they should continue to help mothers during this tough period.

“As a government, we are delighted to celebrate midwives in Kenya for their tireless commitment and professionalism in delivering safe, effective, and respectful quality care to mothers and their babies. We cannot thank you enough. We are extremely grateful,” Kagwe said.

The International Midwives day is celebrated every May 5 to honor and acknowledge the role the midwives play in society especially by taking care of expectant women.

This year’s theme is “Midwives with women, celebrate, demonstrate, mobilize, and unite”.

The day to honor the role of midwives in the society was first recognized in 1987 by Midwives in the Netherlands. It was first celebrated in 1991.

As the world continues to celebrate this special group of people, we have to recognize and honor them, especially at this time when we are battling the deadliest infection, Covid-19.
