The University of Nairobi (UON) finally administered its first-ever end of semester exams online on Tuesday, May 26, 2020.

UON said it administered the exams to 20 of its students who are pursuing Masters of Arts in Environmental law and Masters of Arts in Environmental Policy where it used google platforms to do the monitoring.

Dr. Collins Odote, the Director, Centre for Advanced Studies in Environmental Law and Policy (CASELAP) said the exams followed after thorough teaching and learning which was also done virtually through Google and other platforms.

“We used Google platforms to administer our exams-first we invited our students to Google Classroom so that we are able to see all of them and then we used Google Meet to monitor or invigilate the process,” Dr. Odote said.

UON said up to 5,500 online classes are ongoing with students and lecturers having to interact virtually since Covid-19 disrupted teaching in all learning institutions.

Different Universities have been forced to adapt to the new ways of teaching and Google among other platforms, has come in handy to rescue the education sector during this time.

One of the challenges the university and most Kenyan learning institutions are facing is the poor network connections as well as affordability of bundles by most students.

UON said it was in talks with Telco Company Telkom which will provide free data bundles to students and Lecturers while those with poor connections will get Lecture Playback videos and courseware packages so that they are not left behind during the virtual learning.

Other students with special needs will have their issues addressed individually as they arise according to the university’s management.

Most Universities have also started to conduct virtual teaching as the learning calendar remains disrupted by the Covid-19 crisis. There is still uncertainty when the schools will resume physical teaching, but in the meantime, the Universities have to adapt.
