Kirinyaga MCAs Impeach Governor Waiguru Despite A Court Order

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru Kamotho has been impeached by a whooping twenty-three out of 33 MCAs on 9th June 2020.

The MCA’s who voted out Waiguru argued that the Governor had abused office and had conducted herself in a manner unbecoming of the office.

Four of the Kirinyaga county ward representatives abstained from the voting while six members were absent in the chaotic proceedings.

The impeachment motion filed by Mutira Ward MCA David Kinyua was reported to have been as a result of frustrations from the Government in his attempts to get her to sit down with the MCAs and sought the issues.

MCAs were officially notified of the agenda of the sitting to be the impeachment of Governor Waiguru yesterday evening unlike previously when the agenda of a sitting would be sent in sufficient time.

This was meant to avoid any coercion and intimidation before slated Waiguru impeachment at the Kirinyaga county assembly.

The MCAs who sought to oust Waiguru even switched off their phones to ensure that their plans were not interrupted.

The High Court through Judge Weldon Korir had earlier in April temporarily stopped the impeachment of Governor Waiguru on grounds that the current Covid-19 pandemic would violate her constitutional rights to a fair hearing.

“If the assembly proceeds with the violation of the subsiding court orders, I shall see such orders for contempt against the speaker and all participating members as are available under the law,” Governor Waiguru said adding that she would not be bullied by the MCAs.

“For some inexplicable reason, the members pushing this motion believe or have been led to believe that they are above the law. Their allegiance seems to be to a master pulling and pushing the levers from outside the assembly and not the rule of law,” Waiguru said.

“I shall not be bullied. My single and unceasing interest is to serve the people who elected me. I will be vindicated by the law, truth, and justice,” a seemingly irritated Governor Waiguru said.
