Derek who was filmed harassing and pressing his knee on helpless George Floyd until he succumbed appeared before a Minneapolis Court for the first time and answered questions without submitting a plea.

For the unintentional degree murder the maximum penalty is a prison term of at least 40 years while the other two; one count of third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter the maximum penalty terms are 25 and 10 years respectively.

The former Minneapolis state policeman was not charged for first-degree murder as there was no proof that he had planned or had a bad motive against the deceased. His lawyer did not dismiss the bail.

The bail set for the Policeman was based on a condition where he was supposed to surrender his firearms, not work in law enforcement or security in any capacity and ensure he does not have contact with George Floyd’s family. Mr. Derek was also told he could pay 1.2 million dollars minus the stated conditions.

However, due to the weight of his case State prosecutor Matthew Frank wanted ex-officer Derek’s bail to be increased by the court especially because it sparked a public uproar.

Other officers who were filmed in the video where Derek was harassing George Floyd were also charged for aiding and abetting murder.
