Migori Governor Okoth Obado has been arrested after presenting himself to the Ethics and Anti-corruption Commission (EACC) offices in Kisii.
EACC detectives last evening got a green light to arrest Migori Governor Okoth Obado, his four children, business associates, and staff over alleged embezzlement of 73.5 million shillings from the county coffers.
Officials said they presented themselves to detectives at EACC offices in Kisii on Wednesday morning, a day after the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji charges against him.
The DPP also gave consent to the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission to go after 13 companies the governor and his co-accused allegedly dealt with in the execution of the fraud.
Some of the money was used to purchase prime property in the upmarket Loresho Ridge in Nairobi that was registered under Obado’s daughter, Evelyn Obado
According to the DPP, the anti-graft agency launched a probe into the case through the governor’s designated proxies and employees of the county government.
Governor Okoth Obado is out on bond in the murder of Sharon Otieno who was brutally murdered while pregnant days after making it known to his associates that he was responsible for the pregnancy.
“The investigations were in respect of 73.4 million shillings being sums indirectly received by the governor Migori county through his children who received multiple payments from companies trading with the Migori county government between 2013-2017,” Haji said
According to an audit trail by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, the companies that were trading with the Migori county government wired Sh38.9 million to the accounts of Obado’s three children.
The money was used as their school fees, upkeep, maintenance, and medical bills in Australia, Scotland, and the United Kingdom.
The four children who will be charged alongside their father are Achola Dan Okoth, Susan Scarlet Okoth, Jerry Zachary Okoth, and Adhiambo Evelyn Okoth.
