SportPesa Is Back

SportPesa is back. Yes. That is the news. You heard it right. The once Kenya’s giant gaming company is back and Kenyans are just about to start what they did better back then.

Ronald Karauri, the CEO of SportPesa has confirmed that the firm is back under a new certificate from the Betting Control and Licensing Board.

SportPesa halted its operations in Kenya over what it termed as an unfriendly environment and frustrations from the government.

SportPesa was at loggerheads with the government, through the Betting Control and Licensing Board (BCLB) and the Ministry of Interior after their operational permits were canceled.

“SportPesa is disappointed with the decision by the Kenyan legislature to impose a 20 percent excise tax on all betting stakes,” said SportPesa in a statement on their website then.

According to SportPesa, while exiting the Kenyan market, the 20 percent withholding tax was based on a fundamental misunderstanding by the Rotich led treasury of how revenue generation works in the bookmaker industry.

But now, it is back, and let the games begin.
