President Uhuru Kenyatta has directed all other learning institutions in the country to reopen in January 2021 as the government continues to monitor the rising Covid-19 cases.

Learners who had already resumed classes will be allowed to continue with their lessons in preparation for the national examinations while observing COVID-19 guidelines issued by the country’s MOH.

“With respect to the examination classes that have already resumed learning, I hereby order that they continue with their learning and examination preparations but under heightened health safety measures, and also order that all basic education classes resume in-person learning in January 2021,” he said.

At the same time, Uhuru directed Members of Parliament to ensure the provision of handwashing stations, face masks, and sanitizers to all schools especially those that have already resumed and those yet to in January 2021.

“I urge them to make investments that focus on additional handwashing points in our schools, on the provision of face masks to our children, on general sanitization as well as a physical distancing of students and teachers,” said the President.

President Uhuru Kenyatta also extended the nationwide curfew to January 2021 with immediate effect during his address to the nation on the way forward on COVID-19. Curfew hours were also extended to start from 10 pm to 4 am as compared to from 11 pm to 4 am.

The president instructed bars and restaurants to be closing their businesses at exactly 9 pm and those who will be found operating beyond will have their licenses revoked. Business owners have protested the move saying it will hurt their already ailing businesses.

All political gatherings have been banned for 60 days. Those who will be found will be prosecuted. Those wishing to hold political gatherings will be required to do so in town halls and have those attending putting on masks and observing social distance.
