For the first time, MultiChoice has more than 20 million subscribers. The company says its subscriber base stands at 20.1 million, the first high in its history. The company now says it is embarking on revamping its content to catch up with the changing world.
The company says it serves 8.7 million households in South Africa (43 percent and 11.4 million households from other parts of the world; African continent (57 percent.). Their 90-day active subscribers rose by 6 percent while the number of their monthly active subscribers rose by 26 percent.
During the week, MultiChoice unveiled a new Explora Ultra capable of delivering 4K content and Dolby Atmos audio and is integrated with Netflix as well as its own streaming platform, Showmax.
The new decoder has a built-in Wi-Fi; a completely redesigned interface, and a redesigned remote control giving the user an experience “like no other.” The company has told customers to expect more.
The new decoder comes at a time MultiChoice is under pressure to deliver great content to their customers in the face of stiff competition from online content creators.
“The addition of the Netflix app to a DStv Explora Ultra, connected to the Internet, opens the door to Netflix’s critically acclaimed local and international entertainment across a wide variety of genres,” said MultiChoice in a statement.
“Shifting consumer preferences and technological advances drive changes in the way video entertainment services are provided and consumed. This partnership leads with an expanded choice of content, ease, and convenience of subscription and payment with the DStv Explora Ultra as an enabler,” added the company.
According to MultiChoice, for the year ended September 2020, the entertainment giant committed 38 percent of its general entertainment budget to produce 1870 hours of local content despite restrictions of the pandemic. This brought its content library to 59,000.
