Do you support the reintroduction of caning in schools?

The Cabinet Secretary of Education Professor George Magoha wants the caning of students in Kenyan schools reintroduced to cut down on the increasing indiscipline cases.

According to Magoha, the indiscipline in schools is because most students know that there are no repercussions for their actions. He says teachers should be allowed to instill some through the cane.

Beating of students in schools by teachers in Kenya is currently illegal and teachers found doing so risk being prosecuted. Parents are also against the caning.

The call from Professor George Magoha comes after more than 7 schools went up in flames as students went on rampage with an examination phobia said to be one of the reasons.

The burning of the school’s started at Chesamisi High School in Bungoma County where students destroyed property worth millions of shillings.

It then spread to St. Luke’s Kimilili Boys, still in Bungoma County and then to Bukembe Secondary School. Bungoma High School has also gone on strike. Yesternight, Kabianga Boys High School was on fire and students sent home.

All learning institutions resumed on January 4, 2021 after being shut for more than 9 months. President Uhuru Kenyatta ordered schools to be shut to cut down on the spread of Covid-19.
