Influential Kenyans Stole Ksh 177 Million From IDPs

Influential Kenyans might have stolen a whopping 176.6 million shillings from internally displaced persons (IDPs) according to the audit report from the Auditor General. From the records, the cash might have gone to individual pockets.

According to Auditor-General Nancy Gathungu, the doubtful payments were made through the National Humanitarian Fund in the 2018/19 financial year. But there are no clear records of the recipients of the cash as claimed by the officials.

“Supporting schedules for payments were not provided for audit review with management indicating that the banks requested for more time to collate the data from branches that were paid the IDPs,” she says in a report tabled in Parliament.

For years, Kenyans displaced during the 2007/08 post-election violence have been staying in camps waiting on the promise by the government of Kenya to resettle them. The resettlement program has been marred with corruption and tribalism.

The revelation by the current Auditor-General comes after her predecessor Edward Ouko found out that at least 2.5 billion shillings might have been stolen under the pretense of paying the IDPs. Mr.Oukofound out that the IDs used to pay the victims did not exist.

“Examination of sampled list of IDPs national identity cards (IDs) numbers revealed that payments… were made to IDPs whose national identity card numbers provided did not exist in the database of the National Registration Bureau,” said Ouko.

The land of corruption

Kenya seems to be the undisputed land of corruption. It is as though those who qualify to work in the current government must first be satisfied thieves. The country loses about 1 trillion shillings of the national budget to corruption.

The Jubilee government will go down the annals of history as one of the most corrupt governments, beating that of President Daniel Moi who ruled for 24 years with massive corruption. We borrow loans to be eaten by a few.
