The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has announced a 963 million shillings rehabilitation project for the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) terminals 1B and 1C slated for this year.

The 12-month project is aimed at refurbishing the departure halls to improve the check-in, security screening, retail operations, and passenger lounge experiences. This, KAA says is aimed at improving service delivery at Kenya’s largest airport.

“The refurbishment and facelift of the terminals aim to align the passenger experiences to match what is offered at terminal 1A. The remodeling project is an integral part of the ongoing JKIA Customer Service Improvement Plan (CSIP),” said Acting KAA Managing Director Alex Gitari.

The refurbishment is part of the JKIA expansion strategy which seeks to boost the capacity of the airport to handle at least 25 million passengers in five years from the current 7 million. The airport serves as a major cargo center for both inbound and outbound goods.

Covid-19

JKIA is a great link between Kenya and other nations. It is used to in tourists visiting the country, as well as those coming in for businesses. The coming of Covid-19, however, hit hard on the visitors arriving at the airport to Kenya or en route to other countries.

In 2020, between the month of March and November, the number of visitors arriving at the airport dropped by more than 80 percent due to the Covid-19 concerns as well as the movement restrictions that had been put in place by the government.

With measures having been relaxed, it is expected the number of arrivals in Kenya to improve. However, the emerging of the new strain of Covid-19 in the UK and South Africa might kill the hopes of resurrecting the economy.
