Form Two Student Caught On CCTV Torching Dormitory Arrested

A Form Two student from Friends School Namwela Boys High in Bungoma, who was captured on CCTV torching a dormitory has been arrested. In a statement by the police, detectives in Bungoma took the 18-year-old into custody on Sunday.

The retrieved footage showed the student sprinkling a flammable liquid believed to be petrol. The fire which spread fast destroyed everything inside the dormitory. However, no student was injured during the 8 pm incident.

“The retrieved footage revealed how the 18-year-old student sprinkled suspected petrol at one corner of the dormitory last night before he beetled off through a window after dropping a lighter, ” DCI said in a tweet on Sunday night.

There has been an increase in students’ indiscipline ever since schools reopened for face-to-face learning on January 4th. Over ten schools have had either their dormitory torched or students going on a rampage.

On Friday morning, a fire incident was reported at Bungoma High School in Bungoma County just days after Chesamisi High School, Kimilili High School, Bukembe Boys, Ndivisi High School, Mbakalu High School, and Khasoko High School reported similar incidents.

At Bungoma High School, a section of students are suspected to have burned down their dormitory at about 5 am when their colleagues were having morning classes.

At Kituro High School in Baringo Central, a fire razed three dormitories barely four days after another inferno at the school. In Eldama Ravine, a dormitory was reduced to ashes at Timboroa Boys High School after a fire broke out.

“In terms of fires and the indiscipline in schools, let us stop treating children like eggs, you’re supposed to allow your child to be prepared to go through life,” said Cs Magoha.

He added that teachers must be very vigilant, and any person who feels that he/she is a child and is going to assault a teacher, we shall come to you like a tonne of bricks. He said that he would want all teachers to feel very free to continue to instill discipline.
