Aden Duale Wants Porn Sites Banned In Kenya

Garissa Township MP Aden Duale wants it made illegal to publish or possess pornography, in any computer system or data storage device. He also wants the government to block access to porn websites by individuals within Kenya to “save the youth.”

Aden Duale is drafting a bill that will see tough laws “meant to help tame pornography in the country” reign hard on Artists, Video music producers, Advertisers, and individual computer users. The Bill seeks to amend the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes Act.

The proposed law to be cited as the Computer Misuse and Cybercrimes (Amendment) Act, 2020 is set for publication and introduction in the National Assembly for consideration anytime this week.

Persons found in possession of pornographic material in their phones or computer devices or publishes the same on the internet, social media platforms will face a 20 million shillings fine or 20 years in jail if the law is approved.

Duale’s bill seeks to provide that it would be illegal for any person to produce pornography for the purpose of publication through a computer system. He also seeks to make it illegal for anyone to use electronic mediums to promote terrorism.

This is all well and good as pornography is a menace in any society but it still begs the question as to whether the fight against pornography should be given priority when there are still major corruption cases in the country and the alleged culprit are still free to go on with their daily lives.

Aden Duale seems clueless in proposing the law. Having porn on a phone or laptop is a personal choice. We do not need a law for that. You cannot legislate morality.

Thieves who stole from KEMSA are walking on the streets, no harsher punishment but porn is what Duale sees as urgent and urgent attention.
