As Kenya’s retail sector continues to struggle with a myriad of challenges, and as giants such as Tuskys, Nakumatt, and Uchumi breath their last, some like Carrefour are having a field day and sailing through the challenges making billions in sales.
In 2020, as the economy went down as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic, Carrefour made 25.3 billion shillings in sales across its Kenyan outlets. The retailer has been expanding across the country with the latest new outlets in Uganda.
The company announced the 30.2 percent jump in sales from 19.4 billion recorded in 2019 indicating that its aggressive expansion bid across major towns in Kenya and a focus on online shopping was paying off as compared to other struggling peers.
Carrefour opened the first store in Kenya in 2016. The retailer now has 11 outlets. The company has capitalized more on online platforms where shoppers can shop and have their goods delivered. The retailer has also developed an app to enable people to shop.
