Most Kenyan Motorists Prefer Fueling At Shell And Total

Currently, the statistics indicate that there is a vehicle for every 30 Kenyans. With a bursting population of 40 million-plus, more than 10,000 vehicles are sold in Kenya annually.

Kenya holds the 8th position in Africa among countries where motorists are hitting the road the most. Here are the top 10 countries where motorists are hitting the road the most:

There are at least 500,000 cars in Nairobi alone. The number of vehicles in Nairobi alone is likely to be more than 1.35 million in 2030, going by the current rate of registration.

The National Transport and Service Authority (NTSA) registers 7,000 vehicles monthly and 90,000 every year in Nairobi. With roads not expanding, Nairobi is likely to continue experiencing traffic jams as years go by.

But where do Kenyan motorists prefer fueling their cars? Research done by the Soko Directory research desk involving 1,000 motorists showed that motorists prefer four major fuel suppliers; Shell, Total Kenya, Ola, and Rubis.

The research that was in form of a poll showed that 46 percent of Kenyan motorists prefer fueling at Shell while 44 percent of them prefer going for Total Kenya. 5 percent of motorists prefer Ola while another 5 percent prefer fueling at Rubis.

But why do they prefer the four fueling stations, especially Shell and Total Kenya? Most respondents say at both Shell and Total, one is assured of quality fuel with no incidences of adulteration as compared to others. They also say the two companies often run promotions that give incentives to motorists.

The Energy Petroleum and Regulatory Authority (EPRA) has been cracking a whip on fueling stations that have been found to be selling adulterated fuel to unsuspecting motorists. Already 12 fueling stations have been shut down.

During the January – March 2021 period, the Authority conducted 5,536 tests at 1,182 petroleum sites. From the tests, 98.99 percent were found to be compliant. 12 sites were however found to be non-compliant and were shut down.
