Schools To Re-open On May 10 As Earlier Planned – Magoha

Education Ministry Cabinet Secretary Prof. George Magoha has reassured parents and guardians that schools shall reopen on May 10, 2021, as earlier planned.

CS George Magoha dispelled rumors that opening dates for primary and secondary schools may change over the third wave of coronavirus that has struck Kenya.

The CS said that the covid-19 curve was flattening and therefore there was no need to call education stakeholders to restructure the academic timetable.

Speaking in Kiambu County on Monday while supervising the opening of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) exams container, CS Magoha asserted that current data shows a decline in COVID-19 infections across the country.

The CS Magoha’s pronouncement comes despite President Uhuru Kenyatta’s directive that all learning institutions will remain closed indefinitely except for candidates sitting exams.

On March 26, the President announced a raft of new measures to curb the rising cases of Covid-19. They included an 8 pm curfew in five counties classified under one zone. The counties are Nairobi, Kiambu, Kajiado, Machakos and Nakuru.

“I’m hoping since it looks like the pandemic is going to flatten, there is no need for me to summon stakeholders as the timetable is likely to remain the same for the rest of the year,” CS Magoha said

Meanwhile, the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education – KCPE – results will be released within the next two weeks to allow for timely form one selection

In the letter by Education Principal Secretary (PS) Julius Jwan, the Ministry asked the education officials to organize picking of the students from their schools. The form-four candidates are expected to finish their KCSE from next week.

CS George Magoha said that the examinations have not been leaked as the government has made sure of inspecting each container every morning before disbursing the exams.

“We arrested the key mastermind in Rusinga and therefore we have disrupted the rogue nature of people who had started exposing exams before time,” Magoha said.

The Covid-19 positivity rate in the country has remained well over the World Health Organization recommendation of five percent and below for the last 14 days. On Saturday, it was 12.4 percent, down from Friday’s 14.9 percent.
