The Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Nancy Macharia has said the commission will hire 5,000 teachers beginning July.

Some 6,000 intern teachers will also be recruited in the 2021/22 financial year. In a communication on Wednesday, CEO Nancy Macharia said the Treasury has allocated Sh2.5 billion for the recruitment of the teachers.

“This is to ease the teachers’ load in handling the increased enrollment. Qualified unemployed and registered teachers to look out for advertisements for applications next month,” read her statement in part.

According to Nancy Macharia, they have trained more than 100,000 teachers in readiness for CBC implementation in Grade 5 in July. The Treasury had allocated one billion shillings for the CBC teacher training in the next financial year.

Treasury has allocated the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) Sh2.5 billion for teacher recruitment in the year starting July despite the Commission requesting 13.1 billion shillings.

The funding shortfall means the Commission will not achieve its target of hiring 25,000 teachers and 12,000 interns next financial year amid a biting shortage across the country.

Macharia noted that already they have trained 156,000 teachers in primary schools on CBC. The implementation of the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC), suffered a setback after the National Treasury allocated only 1 billion shillings and slashed allocation to the teacher’s employer by 18.7 billion shillings.

A total of 202.8 billion shillings was set aside for the education sector recovery programs following lost time since the outbreak of Covid-19 in the country in March 2020.

The outbreak led to the closure of learning institutions for nine months. Treasury CS Ukur Yattani also said 12 billion shillings will cater for free primary education, 2.5 billion shillings for recruitment of teachers, and Sh62.2 billion for the free day- secondary education including insurance for learners.

“4 billion shillings is for the examination fee waiver for all class eight and form four candidates and Sh1 billion for the school feeding program,” Yattani said.

TSC had proposed an allocation of Sh300.5 billion to finance its activities, including hiring more teachers to manage the increased student population under the government’s 100 percent transition from primary school.

Applications for the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) vacancies are done purely online. In filling the advertised teaching vacancies, the Commission invites qualified teachers to submit their applications online at the TSC online recruitment portal; https://hrmis.tsc.go.ke/
