Dates By TSC For Interviews And Reporting Day For New Teachers

The Teachers Service Commission, TSC, has released the interview dates and recruitment schedule for teachers in July 2021.

According to the reviewed roadmap for the mass recruitment of teachers, interviews for shortlisted applicants shall be held from Thursday 22nd July 2021 to Wednesday 28th July 2021.

Teachers recruited in July 2021 will receive their employment letters from 28th August 2021 and report to their new stations on Wednesday 1st September 2021.

TSC sends a letter of employment to a newly recruited teacher after successfully vetting the teachers’ documents. The letter is sent to the teacher through the station where the teacher has been posted to serve under TSC terms.

In the letter, the Commission Secretary spells out the entry-level of the teacher i.e., Secondary School Teacher II for teachers entering the profession as degree holders. The station where the teacher has been posted and the subjects to be handled are also written on the employment letter.

The storm has erupted regarding job requirements issued by the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) in its quest to hire more tutors.

According to the report, unemployed teachers and those in the private sector accused the commission of favoring its interns. They claimed that in the requirements, scoring marks for interns were much higher than those of older unemployed individuals.

For instance, marks for interns attached to TSC were revised upwards from 10 percent to 30 percent

“Internship is meant to make someone gain experience. Is it to say that only public schools can give that experience? Why is a teacher disadvantaged for working in a private institution serving public students?” Questioned a teacher.

TSC announced the 10,000 teaching jobs towards the end of June to address the shortage of tutors in schools.

A newly recruited teacher works on probation for a period of not less than six (6) months. In some cases, the probation period may be extended if the teacher’s performance is unsatisfactory; at worst, the teacher’s employment may be terminated before the completion of the probation period.

To be confirmed on permanent terms, the head of the institution fills a recommendation form for the teacher that is sent to TSC for approval.

The employment letter also spells out the expected basic salary per year depending on the entry grade of the teacher. The teacher is also entitled to monthly allowances pegged on his/her grade.
