South Africa is literally burning. It is on fire. Thousands of people have taken to the streets, looting, setting on fire, and taking lives in what is being described as the “worst demonstration in South Africa since Apartheid.”
Protesters took to the streets demanding the release of former President Jacob Zuma who was jailed for 15 months by the country’s Constitutional Court for refusing to appear before a corruption investigating committee.
Jacob Zuma presented himself to the authorities a week ago and is currently in prison. What started like a protest against his arrest has turned into violence that is spreading across the country. The demos are more in Kwa Zulu Natal.
The government has released the army against the protesters. Videos of teargas and water cannons have emerged as the army tries to battle the protesters. Unconfirmed reports have indicated that at least 40 people have been killed.

South African police said in a statement they had identified 12 people suspected of provoking the riots, and that a total of 1,234 people had been arrested. President Cyril Ramaphosa has warned the demonstrators that they will face the law.
People could be seen attacking malls and stealing anything they could lay their hands on. Those dealing in electronics have felt the most heat as well as those selling motorbikes.
There were reports on Monday that at least four banks were attacked and money was lost in the process. Tension continues to rise across the country with prices of goods rising by more than 150 percent.
