The SportPesa Foundation extended its continual support to maternal health care in the country on Friday morning at the Ruben Health Centre in Mukuru.

The equipment donated included oxygen cylinders, an ultrasound machine, BP manual monitors, foetal Dopplers, Oxygen Concentrators, baby weighing scales, drip stands, and maternity packs among others.

The facility was opened 20 years ago and the services include child welfare aside from the maternity facilities.

In 2017, the health care center was only offering outpatient services with 22 staff members and helped curb the cholera outbreak.

They are offering covid vaccinations and have vaccinated over 450 community members and plans are underway to offer rapid tests in the community

They recently participated in a polio and measles campaign which saw 7,000 children vaccinated.

The home deliveries in the area were 38% in the community and now it’s 3.1% all because of the difference the center is bringing to the residents in and around Mukuru.

“Thank you for choosing our center for your generous donation, it means a lot to us and our community.

“We can assure you that everything you have given to us will go a long way in transforming the health care in this area,” Zipporah Mwangi, head of the Health care department stated.

Over 3,000 mothers have given birth at the center, on average around 100 deliveries a month, with 80 new mothers in the clinic in the same amount of time.

The maternity unit which began in May 2019, has a 12-bed capacity working with 8 nurses and 4 assistants.

“I am lost for words just after seeing the work that has been done here. You are all doing a wonderful job and I am so proud to be a part of it.

“Maternal health care is one of the key pillars of the society, we are all here because of our mothers and this is just a small token of our appreciation to you,” said Esther Matere, the Project Manager at the SportPesa Foundation.

“I just want to congratulate you all for the great work you’re doing and we will walk with you through this journey as you continue to better the community through this health center,” she added.

SportPesa Foundation launched its maternal health support six months ago in Bomet County.

To date it has made donations to Rironi Health Centre in Limuru, Lunga Lunga Health and Riruta Health Centres in Nairobi, Mikinduri sub-County Hospital, and Ankamia Dispensary both in Meru and Ndarawetha Dispensary in Bomet.
