KEY POINTS

It’s not just the size that makes an ostrich stand out, it is also flightless, the fastest of the birds, and quite dumb for that matter.

The ostrich is one of the largest birds in the world. And it’s not just the size that makes it stand out. It’s a flightless bird with small wings and strong legs making it the fastest bird.

While it’s argued that this creature can show reasonable smarts, what makes it stand out as the dumbest bird is its reaction to threat. This is according to AZ Animals, which gives details on amazing animal facts and activities around the globe.

When scared, this bird gets down and falls to the ground, then lays its head and neck in front.  In some instances, they bury their heads in the sand and assume they cannot be noticed by the predators.

The Ostrich may also run away or attack with a kick of its powerful legs if they are concerned.

The dumbness of an ostrich is usually associated with its small brain that requires a microscope to see.

Its eyes are about the size of billiard balls. They take up so much room in the skull that the brain is smaller than either one of its eyeballs. This may be why the ostrich, despite its tremendous running speed, is not very good at eluding predators: It tends to run in circles.

The average weight, length, and width of the total brain are 26.34 g, 59.26 mm, and 42.30 mm,

The whole-brain of the African Ostrich represents only 0.015% of the total body weight, and it is 17 times lighter than the brain of domestic fowls.
