KEY TAKEAWAYS
Shapovalov, meanwhile, is looking forward to the challenge he will face against the legendary left-hander: “It's always an honor to play someone like Rafa,” said the 22-year-old. “Always fun, always going to be battle, it's going to be tough.”
Other players to watch on the Men’s side are Gael Monfils, Matteo Berrettini, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Daniil Medvedev.
SuperSport viewers on DStv can look forward to seeing all the action from the first tennis Grand Slam of the year, the Australian Open, which will wrap up at Melbourne Park from Tuesday 25 to Sunday 30 January 2022.
SuperSport is the ultimate destination for Tennis fans, with an unparalleled selection of an action from around the world.
On the Men’s Singles side, all eyes in the final days of the Australian Open will be on Rafael Nadal, with the Spaniard looking to win a record 22nd Grand Slam title and move clear of the current mark of 21 that he shares with great rivals Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic.
Nadal has thus far seen off Marcos Giron, Yannick Hanfmann, Karen Khachanov, and Adrian Mannarino, dropping just one set in the process. He will come up against Canada’s Denis Shapovalov in the quarterfinals on Tuesday 25 January.
“[The] first set was very emotional,” said the 35-year-old Nadal, the 2009 Australian Open champion, who survived an epic 28-minute tiebreak to defeat Mannarino on Sunday. “That crazy first set was so important.”
Shapovalov, meanwhile, is looking forward to the challenge he will face against the legendary left-hander: “It’s always an honor to play someone like Rafa,” said the 22-year-old. “Always fun, always going to be battle, it’s going to be tough.”
Other players to watch on the Men’s side are Gael Monfils, Matteo Berrettini, Stefanos Tsitsipas, and Daniil Medvedev.
On the Women’s Singles side, Australian home favorite Ashleigh Barty has set up a quarterfinal showdown with American Jessica Pegula on Wednesday 26 January, having beaten Lesia Tsurenko, Lucia Bronzetti, Camila Giorgi, and Amanda Anisimova without dropping a set.
One of the emerging threats to Barty’s hopes of a first Australian Open title is Madison Keys, who has enjoyed a resurgence at this tournament – where she is unseeded – by defeating Sofia Kenin, Jaqueline Cristian, Wang Qiang, and Paula Badosa, the number eight seed who was tipped to win a first Grand Slam by many pundits.
“I think it’s obviously easy to say it now, that as long as you keep doing the right things, things will work out and all of that,” Keys said.
“I felt like I was doing a lot of the right things last year, I was doing my best, and it just wasn’t happening. Tennis can change in a week. Just knowing that it will eventually get better, you just kind of have to hold onto that.”
