KEY TAKEAWAYS
Although they might be very affordable, a lot of people hesitate to buy them due to hygiene or the surrounding environment.
Street food is always good for your soul, the foods are diverse and always have a unique and addictive taste. If you walk across the streets of many towns in Kenya, you won’t miss finding at least one or two of the below.
- Smokie Pasua
This is one of the most common street foods that is loved by many. It is basically Smokies served with (kachumbari) which is a mixture of tomatoes, chilies, and onions, you can also choose to add sauce and salt. The food can be eaten like that or you can roll it inside a (Chapati). Trust me you will love this.
- Samosa.
This is one of the cheapest and most common street foods found on the streets, it is basically baked pastry with ingredients of either meat, chicken, potatoes, mung beans and it is served with also kachumbari and sauce.
- Mutura
One of my favorites is this snack especially when hot and served with hot chilies and Kachumbari. It is made by stuffing goat intestines with a combination of ground meat, goat blood, and seasonings such as ginger, garlic, coriander, and chilies. The snack is loved by many and it’s usually served mostly in the evening hours.
- Grilled Maize
This is basically roasted maize served with lemon and chili, the perfect snack to take tea with or eat it like that while strolling.

- Viazi Karai
The perfect ones are the ones from Mombasa, trust me you will love them. They are made by frying potatoes mixed with spices and they are very affordable. Perfect snack for breakfast or lunch and you can eat them with a drink or your preferred soup.
- Fried Cassava
This is basically fried cassava served with some lemon and Kachumbari, it is very affordable and really worth it.
- Nyama Choma
This is mostly found where there is a butchery, the meat is roasted and served with Kachumbari plus either Ugali a local delicacy, or fries. The price will vary depending on the place and the quantity.
- Boiled eggs
Mostly they are found hand in hand with Smokies, if you see someone selling smokies definitely have boiled eggs. The eggs are served with Kachumbari and sauce and they are cheaper than the smokies plus very affordable.
Although they might be very affordable, a lot of people hesitate to buy them due to hygiene or the surrounding environment. But all in all the foods are amazing at least once in a while try them when you have a chance and thank me later.
