Education cabinet secretary prof George Magoha has urged The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) teachers to suspend the planned strike until national examinations are completed.

Speaking in Nyamira county during the opening of a new CBC classroom, Magoha urged the teachers to call off the plan to avoid subjecting the candidates to distractions during their exams.

“I want to plead with them to suspend that strike or they can issue it immediately after exams, it will be fair to the children,’’ Magoha said.

Magoha added that the government is well prepared for the national examinations which are set to kick off on March 7, 2022.

Kuppet secretary-general Akello Misori said that teachers have been yearning to receive better pay, where they want a salary increment of between 30 to 70 percent for the highest-paid and the lowest-paid teacher. He threatened that teachers would halt their work within seven days if the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) would not meet their demands.

“The union is left with no option but to convene our organs to explore all avenues open to us and guide our members in their quest for a salary increment,’’ Misori said

The union said that TSC failed to honor the 2021-2025 collective Bargaining Agreement where a number of demands were made to the commission.
