Most parts of the Rift Valley region including Nairobi County and southeastern lowlands will receive intensified rainfall.

The Kenya metrological department has urged Kenyans to be on the lookout over the heavy rainfall expected in various parts of the country between the months of March and May.

The department has added that most parts of the Rift Valley region including Nairobi County and southeastern lowlands will receive intensified rainfall. The coastal and the Northeastern regions will receive medium rainfall.

‘’The peak of the rains is expected to be in the month of April for most regions except over the Coastal strip where the peak is expected during the month of May,’’ said the weatherman.

This comes after a heavy downpour was experienced in parts of Nairobi on Tuesday afternoon.

According to statistics, rainfall performance hasn’t been consistent across the country. For instance, the 2021 March to May long rains were shown to have fluctuated and the Western, Central, and Southeast of Mandera counties received 91-110 percent of normal rains.

Turkana, Narok, Kitui, West Pokot, and western parts of Mandera county reported 111-140 percent of the normal amount of rains.

Considering the food sector, the Kenya Food Security Steering Group (KFSSG) has reported that the rainfall onset was timely in the western parts of the country as opposed to the eastern parts of the country.

Both livestock and crop production were affected by the poor distribution of rains which led to a low yield of farm produce.
