Here Is The Premier League, La Liga And Serie A Preview

This weekend of Premier League matches opens on Saturday afternoon with Manchester United welcoming Southampton to Old Trafford for an early kick-off. United’s last home match in the league brought a dramatic 1-0 win over West Ham United in which Marcus Rashford scored an injury-time winner, and the Red Devils will be hoping for a similar result as they chase a place in the top four.

“For me, it was clear from the very beginning it would take some patience against a well-organized team like West Ham. It was not always easy for us to find the best possible solutions in the final third,” said United manager Ralf Rangnick.

He added, “The physicality of the game was really outstanding and we know we still have to improve with possession of the ball. If you score with the last seconds of the game, the big advantage is there is no time for the team to reply and that was a good one about the goal.”

Saturday’s late afternoon games feature Everton hosting Leeds United at Goodison Park, as well as a London derby between Brentford and Crystal Palace before the late kick-off sees Manchester City look to take another step toward a successful defense of their title when they face Norwich City at Carrow Road.

“That’s why it is the hardest prize to achieve every season, the most important one,” said City manager Pep Guardiola of the Premier League title. “It’s so difficult, with different contenders, everyone is ready. We are the reigning champions, we have won a lot in the past, and it’s not so funny for the rest, so it’s more difficult to win and win.”

Sunday is headlined by Liverpool’s trip to Turf Moor to face Burnley, while Newcastle United have a must-win game at home to Aston Villa in their battle to avoid relegation. Wolverhampton Wanderers will then look for an upset win at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before the weekend is wrapped up with the meeting of Leicester City and West Ham United at the King Power Stadium.

SuperSport is also the only place to get English commentary on the legendary La Liga, where the top match for this round is the Barcelona derby or ‘Derbi Barceloni’ between Espanyol and FC Barcelona at the RCDE Stadium.

Barca won 1-0 at the Camp Nou when these teams met back in November, and they will need another three-point haul off their cross-city rivals if they are to keep themselves in the fight for a top-four finish.

The Blaugrana will look to youngster Pedri to continue the fine form he has shown since returning from injury. “He’s a marvellous little player, and at 19, to do everything well is spectacular,” said manager Xavi. “How he looks in possession, how he perceives the game, he is excellent and the model player. He can lead by character, quality, ambition, it’s great to have him back in the team.”

While Barca is scrapping just to end in the upper reaches of the standings, arch-rivals Real Madrid are targeting the title, though they face a tricky clash away to Villarreal at Estadio de la Ceramica, with manager Carlo Ancelotti urging his team to lift their game in this key phase of the campaign.

“Now comes the most important period of the season, where titles are won. And we’re well-positioned in La Liga as well as the Champions League and the Copa [del Rey],” said the Italian. “It’s clear that it’s a very competitive league.”

Real’s main challengers is Sevilla, who will be at home to Elche and confident of claiming all three points, while those on the fringes of the title race, Real Betis and Atletico Madrid, will be a way to Levante and at home to Getafe respectively.

“We must continue to show our identity,” said Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini. “We have moved on from past controversies, and it is now our aim to fight to finish as high as possible in the standings. There are many high quality teams looking to do the same, so the challenge will be a tough one.”

The top clash from this weekend in Serie A is the meeting of Napoli and Internazionale at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. This clash could prove to be a key one in the battle for the Scudetto, with the Neapolitans hoping to knock the Nerazzurri off their stride, while on the other hand a win for the defending champions would go a long way to securing a second successive crown.

Napoli star Hirving Lozano has already fired off a psychological shot ahead of the clash: “We’re playing for the Scudetto, not hide-and-seek. The season is still long. But we are strong and we must look as high as possible, even if Inter and Milan are going fast,” said the Mexican winger. “We can hold our own against Inter, in fact, we’re stronger. Player by player, man for man, the value is higher here.”

With at least one of Inter or Napoli set to drop points, AC Milan will look to take full advantage with a three-point haul in their match at home to Sampdoria. The game at San Siro gives defender Pierre Kalulu the chance to continue his impressive form.

“If you play consistently, it does make it easier to perform better. I got along well with all my defensive partners and feel quite at ease in central defense,” said the Frenchman, who was originally signed as a right-back but has excelled in the heart of the backline.

Elsewhere, Atalanta and Juventus will resume their rivalry with a key clash at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo, with both teams fighting to earn a spot in next season’s UEFA Champions League. “I am glad because the lads are playing more like a team, understanding when to control the ball in defensive and attacking moments. We are getting there,” said Bianconeri manager Max Allegri.

Also keep an eye out for Jose Mourinho’s Roma, who swing from excellent to desperate depending on their mood – making them one of the most unpredictable and entertaining teams to watch. The Giallorossi will face a tricky clash away to Sassuolo at the MAPEI Stadium in Emilia-Romagna.
