Blue Band At Ksh 420, Toto Afya At Ksh 220: Scary Prices Of Common Goods

As the country warms up to general elections in August, the cost of living continues to skyrocket and might not be taking a break soon. It seems as though the closer we head to an election, the more the prices of common goods continue to spike.

Stepped into the Naivas Supermarket, Ruaraka, and the price of common goods left me shocked and financially mutilated. The way the prices are going up, it will reach a time that the poor in this country will have nothing to eat or buy but the rich.

Two weeks ago, 1 kilogram of Blue Band was going for 330 shillings. This week, Naivas is selling it at 420 shillings, an increase by 40 shillings. Tuzo Milk (small packets) was 500 shillings for a carton a while ago. This week, it is at 588 shillings.

Toto Afya (flour meant for preparing porridge for kids) was 180 shillings last week. This week, it is going for 240 shillings. The small sunlight soap was 20 shillings a week ago. This week it is selling for 33 shillings.

At Naivas Ruaraka today & the new prices of goods left me speechless. Blue Band (1kg) that was Ksh 385 a week ago is now Ksh 420. Tuzo Milk, small ones (Box) now at Ksh 588 from Ksh 540 (previously Ksh 424). Kids uji (flour) Ksh 220 from Ksh 185. Where are we heading?

At the same time, a liter of cooking oil (Fresh Fry) is going for 345 shillings (3 times the price of a liter of Super Petrol). A 2-kilogram packet of Sugar is going for 245 shillings with some brands going for up to 315 shillings.
