PGA Tour The Players Championship: What To Expect

Sometimes dubbed ‘The Fifth Major’, The Players Championship is one of the most prestigious tournaments in golf and always attracts a high-class field. Last year’s edition was won by Justin Thomas, who shot a 274 (14 under) to finish one stroke ahead of runner-up Lee Westwood.

Thomas recently ruffled some feathers when he took a shot at golf great Phil Mickelson for helping organize a Saudi Golf League to rival the PGA Tour.

“Seems like a bit of a pretty, you know, egotistical statement,” the 28-year-old said of Mickelson’s claim that the PGA Tour is greedy. “I don’t know, it’s like he’s done a lot of great things for the PGA Tour, it’s a big reason it is where it is, but him and others that are very adamant about that, if they’re that passionate, go ahead. I don’t think anybody’s stopping them.”

After the 2021 Players Championship saw only a limited capacity of fans in attendance, this year’s edition will be closer to what was experienced in the past, according to tournament executive director Jared Rice.

“It was awesome that we were able to do what we did in 2021. The community was super responsible. And, again, it’s realizing how important that was for our sport at the time. But that’s not who we are long term,” Rice said.

He added, “We’re aspiring to be the best experience in golf, period. And I think for anybody that has come out to the Players Championship in the past, you can see some of those steps that we’ve been making over the years.

“Really focusing on culinary, diverse experiences, having programming over the course of the week. And, oh yeah, by the way, you can watch the world’s best players take any shot at any day on any hole.”

Aside from Thomas defending his title, other players to watch out for include Collin Morikawa, Dustin Johnson, Rory McIlroy, and Xander Schauffele.

The TPC at Sawgrass features a par 72, 7,189-yard course. The purse for The Players Championship is $20million.
