Thug Shot Dead in Thika After Botched Robbery

A member of a notorious gang that has been terrorizing residents of Thika town was shot dead by detectives. The thug was part of a miscreant gang robbing pedestrians of their valuables along the Kiang’ombe-Railway road at around 9 pm.

Armed with a firearm and crude weapons, the thugs accosted two young men believed to be students at the Thika-based Mt. Kenya University.

The students who later told detectives that they would buy the much-coveted avocado fruit were ordered to surrender all their earthly possessions, including mobile phones, belts, shoes, and clothes.

After complying, the students were ordered to surrender their Mpesa PIN numbers at gunpoint, prompting one to scream. Luckily, two cops on foot patrol heard the call of distress and rushed to the aid of the victims.

A fierce exchange of fire between the cops and the thugs fighting to escape followed. When the guns went silent, one thug lay lifeless in a pool of blood as his accomplices leaped to a getaway motorbike heavily wounded.

A firearm with two rounds of ammunition and a machete were recovered from the slain thug. Meanwhile, a search for the rest of the gang members is ongoing. The plight of Kenyans over the rising incidences of criminal activities in several parts of the country has heralded the imposition of more stringent measures to curb insecurity.

The electioneering period is already here with us, and all we aspire for is a peaceful country where no life will be threatened. College and campus students’ lives must be protected.

The future of this country depends on how we will facilitate the education system, both materially, and ensure that all learning institutions and the surrounding environment are always safe for our children.
