Viewers on DStv can look forward to the third round of the 2022 Formula 1 World Championship, the Australian Grand Prix, live from the Albert Park Circuit in Melbourne on the morning of Sunday 10 April 2022.

The previous round in Saudi Arabia in late March saw Max Verstappen of Red Bull Racing claim his first win of the season after a thrilling on-track battle with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc. Carlos Sainz Jr in the sister Ferrari came home in third to further emphasize the Scuderia’s strong start to the season, while Red Bull’s Sergio Perez was fourth.

It is expected that the Ferraris and Red Bulls will again be the dominant force at Albert Park, with RB consultant Helmut Marko insisting that the rivalry between the teams will not get ugly, as it did between the Austrian outfit and Mercedes through the 2021 season.

“It’s a new rivalry,” Marko explained. “Mercedes is at least half a second too slow at the moment, but who knows, they might be able to solve their problems. But we don’t sleep either. We work hard to further develop the car.

“I think it’s better to fight with Leclerc and Ferrari than with Mercedes. It is now more on a sporting level. I know we’ve only had two races, but I don’t think it will escalate as much as it did with Mercedes.”

The Silver Arrows will be desperate to get back on pace with the leading duo, and George Russell – who outperformed seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton in Saudi Arabia – has called for a big improvement heading ‘Down Under.

“I don’t know, because we were still on average a second behind Red Bull and Ferrari in the race then,” explained Russell. “So we’re making baby steps at the moment, we need to make some bigger leaps, I’m sure we can do that.

“Timeline I don’t know, at the end of the day the others are continuing to improve as well, so we’re improving, they’re improving, we just need to do it at a faster rate.”

Yet all eyes are sure to be on the rivalry brewing between Verstappen and Drivers’ Championship leader Leclerc (who has 45 points, followed by Sainz Jr on 33 and Verstappen on 25) after their two firm but fair clashes in Qatar and Saudi.

“It’s super-close between us. You have to be patient as I want to win and score points,” said Leclerc. “We have a lot of respect for each other, which is why we have these good battles.”
